Get the Look : Elizabeth Banks at the Variety Power of Women Event

hair: Jenny Cho   /   stylist: Wendi & Nicole

I have lost count how many times I have done Elizabeth's makeup.  I think we're close to a hundred at this point.  It's wonderful to know a face so well and I am grateful that we've had so many years together to play with looks.

For the Variety Power of Women event, Elizabeth wore a lovely two piece red Dolce and Gabbana box cut top and skirt. Normally I shy away from a red lip with a red dress, but the fabric and the cut were so modern that I thought it would work nicely and would look very current.

I used a semi-matte foundation on her skin, and added highlights where I wanted them.  This keeps the skin looking fresh, but not too shiny.  When I do a red lip, I pair it with bronzer versus a blush.  If you use a blush with a red lip, the color can be overwhelming on the face and it can look a bit juvenile.  The bronzer gives you a sculpted, polished look without competing with the lip.

I love a brow on Elizabeth. Sometimes we go darker and stronger, but on this day I kept it a nice medium ash so it had shape but again, didn't compete with the lip.  For the eyes I used a bit of a contour powder, adding more into the socket and sweeping it under the lower lashes.  It gives the eyes a shape, but doesn't look like a lot of eye makeup.  Of course I used lots of lashes because I am obsessed with lashes.  I can't help it!  Just a little black liner at the lash line makes the lashes look thicker and fuller without looking "liner-y" and 2-3 coats of mascara on the top lashes open the eyes up nice and wide.  For the bottom lashes I used a touch of a burgundy mascara.  It pops the blue of her eyes and doesn't look heavy on the bottom.  I love using two different color mascaras; either a combo of black/brown, black/burgundy or black/navy.  It's very subtle, but makes a big difference.
